Who is the Migrant Advisory Board and why is it elected?
The Freiburg Migrant Advisory Board is dedicated to representing the concerns of migrants in the public sphere and in dealing with the municipal council. To this end, they work on a number of issues including but not limited to political participation, education, women’s rights, anti-racism, and anti-discrimination.
The Advisory Board is a local political body with 19 members, which is re-elected every five years. The members are not party members, but individuals who are committed to addressing the concerns of Freiburg’s migrants on a non-partisan basis. The Migrant Advisory Board is currently represented on the Committee for Migration and Integration, the Committee for Schools and Further Education, and the Committee for Culture. There, it works to ensure that everyone feels well looked after in the city’s society and that the concerns of migrants living here are taken into account in political decision-making processes.
How is it elected?
The 19 members of the Migrant Advisory Board are directly elected by universal, free, and secret ballot.
Each voter has 19 votes. Only one vote may be cast per candidate. The candidates with the most votes are elected. In the event of a tie, the decision is made by drawing lots.
When are the elections held?
There are two ways to vote in the 2025 Migrant Advisory Board election.
- On election Sunday, 25 May 2025, you can vote in four polling stations from 8:00 to 18:00. The relevant polling station is indicated on your polling card.
Please bring the following with you:
- Your polling card and
- An identity document
The ballot papers are handed out at the polling station.
You can also vote online from 28 April 2025 to 23 May 2025. You will receive an access link for online voting together with your polling card from the City of Freiburg.
Who is eligible to vote?
All citizens of Freiburg who
- have foreign citizenship, or
- are naturalised, or
- are late repatriates
and
- are 16 years of age or older and
- have had their main residence in Freiburg for at least six months.
Persons with foreign citizenship will automatically receive a polling card from the City of Freiburg.
Naturalised citizens and late repatriates must first apply to be entered on the electoral roll.

Late repatriates must enclose a copy of the certificate pursuant to Section 15 of the Federal Expellees Act with their application. Naturalised citizens must enclose a copy of their naturalisation certificate with their application.
